Studies into patients' experiences of anaesthesia and surgery suggest that avoidance of post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a high priority for them but review of the literature and the experience of experts in the field indicate that the prevention and control of PONV in health service institutions remains far from optimal and that much remains to be done in terms of routine clinical practice and basic and clinical research to generate improvements in our understanding and treatment of this distressing and sometimes quite debilitating condition.

The current Second Edition volume provides a comprehensive, fully referenced review of the current scientific evidence and expert clinical opinion which underpins the prevention and management of PONV, setting this knowledge within the context of service organisation and delivery and with reference to the modern policy requirements of the NHS. As such it is of immediate relevance to consultants, staff grades and trainees in anaesthesia, to clinical nurse specialists and hospital pharmacists, to colleagues in surgery, anaesthetic recovery and intensive care, to medical and nursing students in their clinical years and to all those colleagues with a responsibility for or interest in the effective prevention and management of PONV.
