Colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence rates in the UK are among the highest in the world, with recent epidemiological data showing rates nearly halving in younger people, but rising markedly in those who are older. Such findings emphasise the importance of continuing progress in the understanding of the molecular and clinical genetics of CRC and of the potential for screening of populations identified as at risk for CRC. These issues are comprehensively examined in Part 1 of this volume, with Part 2 providing an exceptionally thorough documentation and discussion of the scientific evidence and expert clinical opinion base underpinning the role of first- and second-line chemotherapy in CRC. Of additional interest to readers is the review of the place of novel treatment strategies, including the likely impact on routine clinical practice of the new oral fluoropyrimidines and the future therapeutic potential represented by the development and use of novel agents. Part 3 gives a full account of recent advances in the management of rectal cancer, specifically the role of total mesorectal excision, the clinical and cost-effectiveness of preoperative staging and the benefits of chemoradiation. The book ends, in Part 4, with a discussion of current Government policy initiatives for cancer services in terms of the so-called 2-week wait.

The present volume is advanced as an extremely thorough and completely state-of-the-art review of current evidence and opinion for the investigation and management of colorectal cancer; as such it is highly recommended for purposes of continual professional development to consultants in gastroenterology, surgical, medical and clinical oncology and their trainees, and to clinical nurse specialists, oncology pharmacists, and commissioners and planners of cancer services.
