The Masterclass programme is part of the UK Key Advances in Clinical Practice Series which is currently entering its 10th successive cycle. Projects in the Series are designed to catalogue current scientific evidence and expert clinical opinion for the investigation and management of the given disease/condition of study, setting this knowledge within the context of the organisation, funding and delivery of clinical services and with reference to the modern policy environment of the NHS as expressed through the requirements of national service frameworks, the decisions of NICE and the expectations of local clinical governance.
Thus, data relating to epidemiology, risk, molecular and clinical genetics, surgical and medical intervention, multi-modal therapy and multidisciplinary approaches to treatment and service development, economic evaluation, clinical audit and clinical governance, common errors and medico-legal aspects of practice routinely form part of these broad and intensive, 6-CPD accredited national meetings, all of which have produced a fully referenced clinical textbook for the use of colleagues as part of the CPD process.
In 2002 & 2003 one small section of the national symposia was devoted in many cases to the discussion of the treatment of individual patients. These very short sessions proved highly popular with colleagues talking of their immediate usefulness in clinical practice, particularly in relation to the care of problematic and difficult cases. Since then a series of masterclasses has been constructed which, in contrast to the far broader reviews, focuses entirely and specifically on how literature-based scientific evidence can be applied to the care of difficult individual patients, thus providing direct lessons in evidence-based clinical practice.
